How to Accurately Calculate Local Time, Korean Time, and Daylight Saving Time for Overseas Matches
An overseas match time cannot be converted reliably from the country name or a time difference remembered from an earlier broadcast. “New York is 14 hours behind Korea” may be correct during standard time but wrong while daylight saving time is active. Even locations inside the same country can follow different offsets or seasonal clock rules.
A dependable conversion begins with the city where the match will be played, the exact kickoff date, and the time zone used by the official schedule. The time should then be converted from the venue’s local zone to Coordinated Universal Time and from UTC to Korean Standard Time.
This method also reveals whether the match falls on the next calendar day in Korea. That final date check is essential because an accurate hour placed under the wrong date can still cause a viewer to miss the event.
Identify the Venue’s IANA Time Zone
Do not begin with a country-wide assumption such as “United States time,” “Australian time,” or “European time.” Many countries contain several zones, and some regions apply daylight saving time while others do not.
Use the match city and its IANA time zone identifier. Common examples include:
America/New_YorkEurope/LondonAustralia/SydneyAsia/Seoul
The IANA Time Zone Database records civil-time rules for representative locations and is updated when governments change UTC offsets, daylight-saving rules, or zone boundaries. Software and operating systems use this information to determine which offset applies at a particular location and date.
The database lists separate zones for locations within the same country. Australia, for example, has entries including Australia/Sydney, Australia/Brisbane, Australia/Adelaide, Australia/Darwin, and Australia/Perth. The United States has zones including America/New_York, America/Chicago, America/Denver, America/Phoenix, America/Los_Angeles, and Pacific/Honolulu.
This is why entering only “Australia” or “United States” into a conversion tool is not precise enough. A match in Sydney may not convert in the same way as one in Brisbane, even though both are in Australia.
Confirm the time zone through the official competition, club, stadium, or broadcaster page. Look for a zone label, venue city, account setting, or notice such as “times shown in your local time.”
Some websites automatically convert schedules according to the device or account location. A Korean viewer may already be seeing KST even though the match is taking place in London. Converting that displayed time again would create a second, incorrect adjustment.
Record the source information in one line:
Match date + kickoff time + venue city + IANA zone
For example:
August 10, 2026, 20:00 — New York — America/New_York
This record is much safer than writing only “8 p.m. ET,” since abbreviations may be misunderstood and the UTC offset attached to a regional label can change during the year.
Also separate the actual kickoff from related times. A broadcaster may list the beginning of studio coverage, while the league lists the match start. A ticket may show the time when gates open. Use the event time identified specifically as kickoff, first pitch, tipoff, race start, or another relevant competition start.

Use UTC as the Intermediate Step
The safest manual calculation follows this sequence:
Venue local time → UTC → KST
UTC provides a stable intermediate reference. Once the venue’s offset on the match date has been established, convert the local time to UTC. Korean time can then be found by adding nine hours.
South Korea uses Asia/Seoul, Korea Standard Time, and UTC+09:00 throughout 2026. It does not currently observe daylight saving time, so the Korean side of the conversion remains fixed.
Consider a match in New York on August 10, 2026, at 20:00. Daylight saving time is active in most of the United States on that date, and New York uses UTC−4.
The calculation is:
August 10, 20:00 New York + 4 hours = August 11, 00:00 UTC
Then:
August 11, 00:00 UTC + 9 hours = August 11, 09:00 KST
The final result should be written as:
Local: Monday, August 10, 2026, 20:00 — America/New_York
Korea: Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 09:00 KST — Asia/Seoul
Including both dates and weekdays makes the overnight change immediately visible.
The same 20:00 kickoff would produce another result if New York were using standard time at UTC−5:
20:00 + 5 hours = 01:00 UTC on the next day
01:00 UTC + 9 hours = 10:00 KST
The remembered difference between New York and Korea has therefore changed by one hour even though Korea has not moved its clocks.
London provides another clear example. During British Summer Time, London uses an offset one hour ahead of GMT. When the UK returns to GMT, the offset changes. The UK government states that in 2026 clocks move forward on March 29 and return on October 25.
A London match at 20:00 on October 24, 2026, occurs before the clocks return:
20:00 BST − 1 hour = 19:00 UTC
19:00 UTC + 9 hours = 04:00 KST on October 25
A match at 20:00 in London on October 25 occurs after the clock change:
20:00 GMT = 20:00 UTC
20:00 UTC + 9 hours = 05:00 KST on October 26
Two London matches starting at the same local clock time on consecutive dates can therefore appear one hour apart in Korea.

Verify the DST Rule for the Match Date
Never apply the offset being used today to a match scheduled several weeks or months later. The relevant question is which offset the venue will use on the event date.
In most DST-observing areas of the United States, daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and ends at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. For 2026, NIST identifies the DST period as March 8 through November 1.
The United States also has exceptions. NIST notes that Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe DST, while the Navajo Nation in Arizona does. A country-level rule would therefore produce an incorrect result for some venues.
Other countries follow different calendars. The UK changes clocks on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. Southern Hemisphere regions that use summer time follow seasons opposite to those in Europe and North America. The correct rule must be obtained for the exact IANA zone rather than inferred from the month alone.
Transition weekends require extra care because certain local times can be missing or repeated.
When U.S. daylight saving time begins, the clock jumps from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. A schedule showing 2:30 a.m. in a zone making that transition describes a local clock time that does not occur. When DST ends, the clock moves from 2 a.m. back to 1 a.m., so part of the 1 a.m. hour occurs twice.
If an official listing places a match inside a missing or repeated hour, do not guess. Look for an explicit UTC time, offset such as UTC−4 or UTC−5, ticket information, or clarification from the organizer.
A location-aware converter should resolve ordinary transitions automatically when the date, city, and time are entered correctly. Update the device and calendar software because time-zone rules can change through government decisions, and operating systems rely on current time-zone data to apply those rules. IANA periodically releases database updates for precisely this reason.
Check the Korean Date and Weekday Separately
After calculating the Korean hour, perform a second check focused only on the date.
Evening matches in Europe, Africa, and the Americas frequently begin after midnight in Korea. A viewer may correctly calculate “4 a.m.” while still attaching it to the local match date rather than the following Korean date.
Use a final display containing all five elements:
Date + weekday + time + abbreviation + IANA zone
For example:
Local: Monday, August 10, 2026, 20:00 EDT — America/New_York
Korea: Tuesday, August 11, 2026, 09:00 KST — Asia/Seoul
Do not write only:
Match at 09:00
That version does not show whether the event falls on Monday or Tuesday, which zone was used, or whether the time has already been converted.
The weekday offers a useful independent check. If the conversion crosses midnight but the weekday remains unchanged, the date may have been copied incorrectly. A calendar application should calculate the weekday automatically once the full date is entered.

This format exposes DST changes and calendar-day shifts that can be missed in a list containing only Korean hours.
Save the Original Zone and Recheck the Fixture
After verification, create a calendar event using the original local time and named venue zone.
For the New York example, save:
August 10, 2026, 20:00 — America/New_York
A modern calendar with updated time-zone data can display the corresponding Korean time and adjust the event correctly when the device zone changes. Saving only “August 11 at 09:00” as plain text loses the connection to the official venue time.
Before relying on the event, confirm that the device uses automatic date and time, the calendar home zone is correct, and the entry contains an IANA zone rather than a manually typed abbreviation.
Recheck the official schedule near match day. Sports events can be moved because of television selections, weather, venue problems, tournament progression, security requirements, or other operational decisions. A perfect time-zone calculation cannot correct an outdated kickoff time.
Use this final verification sequence:
- Confirm the latest official kickoff.
- Confirm the venue city and IANA time zone.
- Convert the local date and time to UTC.
- Add nine hours for KST.
- Check the Korean date and weekday.
- Compare the result with an official Korean broadcaster or competition listing.
- Store the event with the original named zone.
The central rule is to convert an instant, not an isolated clock reading. Once the match city, exact date, IANA zone, UTC conversion, and Korean calendar date are recorded together, most daylight-saving and next-day errors disappear.
